We are finishing our final Benchmark Test today.

As a math class, we were also assigned the computer lab to work on Compass Odyssey. All students at this time should have completed the FCAT Prep Number Sense and Algebraic Thinking Tests in the FCAT Prep folders. Now that the tests are completed, the program has created a specific learning path based on the results of the individual student score. Now it is each students responsibility to work on those learning paths independently for homework. This is what they should be working on for 60 minutes a week. Again, the 60 minutes is due by midnight every Friday night and the new week begins Saturday morning. The learning paths provide interactive tutorials teaching students the concepts with which they need help.

REMINDER: Student homework has been given as a review for both Pre-Algebra and Algebra students. If a student is having difficulty with an assignment, they will have an opportunity to get help on the day the assignment is due as well as additional help thereafter.

Welcome to Team 7B

Hello parents and students!

Welcome to Team 7B! I am looking forward to working closely with each of you with the purpose of helping you achieve your personal best as an academic as well as a leader!

Happy first 2 weeks of school! It has been a very busy start for us all!
We are starting off the school year with a very busy yet productive first few weeks.
I know many of you are aware of our schedule but I would just like to reiterate and give you a simple breakdown for your calendars.

8/30 Regular B-day
8/31 National Guard Team building-outside all day!
9/1 National Guard Team building-outside all day!
9/2 Regular A-day
9/3 Rock wall-outside all day!

9/6 Labor Day- School closed
9/7 Benchmark Testing- Special Bell schedule- OPEN HOUSE!
9/8 Benchmark Testing- Special Bell schedule- Early Release!
9/9 Benchmark Testing- Special Bell schedule
9/10 Benchmark Testing- Special Bell schedule

During these two weeks, students have been informed to work on Compass Odyssey for an hour each week. Each Friday, your time and progress will be recorded.
Sixty minutes a week is required until the student has completed all math files assigned. At this time, students should be working in the MJ II folder.

Here is a summary of our first week in Pre-Algebra and Algebra.
We have discussed and practiced our Rituals and Routines during math class and Team Time. We organized our binders in class just as they should be kept for the remainder of the school year. These binders will be checked for a grade each quarter. The reason is that organization at this level and beyond is critical for keeping track of notes, assignments, assessments and other essential items. Organization saves time for students, builds confidence and reduces stress!!!
Which we ALL need!

Pre-Algebra students are reviewing all operations of integers.
Algebra students are reviewing order of operations, distributive property and combining like terms.

Students have received homework each night in the form of worksheets.

A little bit about Ms. Hamlow:

I am a National Board Certified teacher with 12 years experience in Middle School Math. I have taught Gifted students for 5 years and enjoy teaching students of all levels! I lived in Dubai for 14 months. While residing there, I drove on the Palm Island, toured the Burj Al Arab Hotel, dined at 6 star restaurants, skied in Ski Dubai, shopped at the Mall of Emirates and swam in the Arabian Sea. However the most rewarding experience was teaching autistic children to communicate and socialize through Behavior Therapy. Last summer I hiked and practiced yoga in the Himalayas’ in India. I have climbed pyramids in Cairo, Egypt, touched real live hieroglyphics and rode a camel! I have had quite a fortunate life in traveling! My dream is to travel more! Perhaps somewhere in Europe next time!

I am learning how to play tennis and trying to get back into running!

Extra hats that I wear at school that keep me crazy busy:
Yoga Club
Math Field Day Coach
Best Buddies Advisor
Wellness Ambassador
Team Leader

Wheeeew! I am exhausted just mentioning it!

Again, I look forward to getting to know you better and helping you through any challenges you may face this year as a 7th grade math student!

Sincerely,

Ms. Hamlow

Algebra EOC Review

<a title="View EOC.algebra.sample EOC on Scribd" href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/30755053/EOC-algebra-sample-EOC" style="margin: 12px auto 6px auto; Students will develop algebraic understanding and skill using expressions and equations, recognize linear and non-linear patterns in graphs, develop an understanding of functions, analyze data with rates and ratios, increase understanding of the structure and properties of the systems of real numbers. Problem solving techniques for various types of real world and algebraic problems are developed. Equations, inequalities, graphs, polynomials, and slope are some of the topics that will be simply yet thoroughly treated. Discussion of a variety of ways to solve problems is strongly encouraged. Successful completion of this course is based on student organization, assignments, assessments and teacher judgment.

Tentative Course Outline

Textbook – College Preparatory Math CPM Math Algebra I www.cpm.org
Springboard

1st Quarter Module 1: Numbers and Operations
Module 2: Scientific Notation and Exponents

2nd Quarter Module 3: Data Analysis and Probability
Module 4: Proportional Reasoning

3rd Quarter Module 5: Algebraic Thinking
Module 6: Geometry and Measurements

4th Quarter Module 7: Linear Equations

Educational Materials:

Black 3-ring binder (1.5")

Dividers with 5 tabs labeled:
1) Homework/Class work (CW/HW)
2) Tool Kit
3) Notes
4) Test and Quizzes
5) Graph Paper

5 red pens
#2 lead pencils
Pencil sharpener with holder for shavings
Ruler
Calculator (basic 4 function)

Notebook paper (loose leaf with 3-ring holes, not from a spiral notebook!)
Graph paper (4 squares per inch)-can also print from tkawas@mathwire.com for free.
Student Evaluation:
≈100 points Assignments– 5 points
≈100 points Quizzes– 5 to 30 points each quiz (announced and pop)
≈300-400 pts Tests- 3 to 4 each quarter, 100 points each
≈100 points Projects- 25-50 points each (detailed instruction and rubrics will be given)
50 points Binder- neat, complete and in order
200 points Final Exam- Accumulative for the quarter

Grade Point Average (GPA) = Total points earned ÷ Total points possible
Any extra credit offered will be offered to the whole class, not individually.
Projects accepted late will receive a letter grade reduction per each day.

Homework Policy:
All assignments must be written neatly and in PENCIL!
All problems must be written out and all work must be shown. In other words, when your parents or teachers read your work, they should be able to understand how you came up with the solution to the problem. Students will receive full credit for all problems written out and work shown, even if the problems are wrong. So please do your best at solving each problem! Students are expected to make-up missed assignments and to turn in them in at the beginning of class on the day they return. Grades will suffer when missed assignments are not completed and submitted. It is THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to talk to teachers and/or classmates about what was missed during an absence. It is a good idea to have the name and telephone number of a trusted classmate to contact about missed assignments when absent.

For each day absent, an equal number of days are allowed to complete make-up assignments. If an absence is due to planned travel, parents should notify teachers in writing at least two days prior to the absence to request assignments that will be missed.

In case of illness lasting three or more days, assignments may be requested through the Guidance Office at 346-5650 ext.114. Students are expected to make-up missed assignments and turn them in at the beginning of class on the day they return.
